MAS 9.0: An Overview of Support Policies and Version Updates

Overview of MAS 9.0 Enhancements

The release of MAS 9.0 marks a significant milestone in the evolution of IBM’s product offerings in the realms of Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Asset Performance Management (APM), and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM).

This version brings the innovative features designed to enhance operational efficiency, optimize asset performance, and streamline maintenance processes. Users can expect improved functionalities that cater to the dynamic needs of modern asset management, ultimately empowering organizations to maximize their return on investment in critical assets.

Simplified Support Policy with MAS 9.0

In addition to the exciting feature updates, MAS 9.0 brings a new, simplified support policy aimed at providing clarity and consistency. The previous support model for MAS 8.x, which combined Continuous Delivery (CD) and Long-Term Support (LTS) releases, has been replaced with a more structured approach.

MAS 9.0 follows IBM’s Lifecycle policy known as “Support Cycle-3,” which is designed to deliver robust support options tailored to meet the needs of diverse user environments.

According to IBM, this policy guarantees: “Defect and non-defect product technical support for a period of at least three years from the date the product release was made generally available.”

The Support Cycle-3 structure breaks down support into three clear categories:

Base Support:

  • Duration: Three years from the general availability date.
  • Features: Comprehensive support, including troubleshooting, access to updates, and technical assistance to ensure smooth operation and optimal performance.

Initial Extended Support:

  • Duration: One year following the Base Release End date.
  • Cost: Available at an additional charge.
  • Features: This tier includes continued support for product usage, provision of existing code patches, critical defect resolutions, and technical assistance to address any issues that may arise post-base support.

Ongoing Extended Support:

  • Duration: Three years after the Initial Extended Support period.
  • Cost: Available at an additional charge.
  • Features: This support tier is more limited, focusing primarily on product usage and existing code patches, offering essential support for continued operations while managing costs.

Example Timeline for MAS 9.0 Support

Let’s see how the support structure works in practice, let’s consider the timeline for MAS 9.0, which was released in June 2024:

  • Base Support: June 2024 – June 2027
During this period, users will receive full product support, ensuring all features are operational and any issues are addressed promptly.
  • Initial Extended Support: June 2027 – June 2028 (Available with Purchase)
After the base support period concludes, users can opt for initial extended support to maintain their system’s reliability.
  • Ongoing Extended Support: June 2028 – June 2031 (Available with Purchase)
This tier allows users to access limited support, focusing on essential maintenance and updates

Streamlined Release Cadence – MAS 9.0

The release cadence for MAS products is another area where significant changes have been implemented. Historically, the MAS suite saw an average of 2 to 3 releases per year, which often led to confusion and integration challenges. Starting with MAS 9.0, the release cadence will be standardized to one major release per year.

One of the notable changes in MAS 9.0 is the adoption of unified versioning across all MAS products. Each product, including Maximo Manage, Maximo Monitor, Maximo Health, and Maximo Predict, will now share the same version number within each release. For example, the current release of MAS 9.0 includes Maximo Manage 9.0, Maximo Health 9.0, and so forth. This simplifies the versioning system, providing users with a clearer understanding of compatibility and updates across the product suite.

Future Release Roadmap

As part of the strategic planning for the MAS product line, IBM has shared a roadmap outlining the anticipated release dates for future versions. According to the latest MAS roadmap plan released in June 2024, the timeline for upcoming releases is as follows:

  • MAS 9.0: Released June 2024
  • MAS 9.1: Projected for June 2025
  • MAS 9.2: Projected for June 2026

Each release will adhere to the established support structure, which includes:

  • One MAS release per year: Ensuring users have access to the latest features and enhancements without overwhelming complexity.
  • Base Support for three years: Providing long-term support for effective asset management.
  • Initial Extended Support available for purchase for an additional year: Allowing organizations to maintain critical operations with added security.
  • Ongoing Extended Support available for purchase for an additional three years: Facilitating sustained performance with essential updates and maintenance.
